At the 2018 awards ceremony at Tokyo International Exchange Center, Japan’s most influential automobile publications, along with car manufacturer executives have gathered to witness the vote counting and prize-giving ceremony for this year’s Japan Car of the Year.
The final vote was split between Volvo XC40 and Toyota Corolla Sport, but after a fierce debate and comprehensive evaluating, the Swedish pride was nominated winner with a total of 49 votes – 363 to 314 respectively. VW Polo picked up third place with 197 votes, while Toyota Crown came fourth with 170 and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was placed on the fifth position with a total of 165 votes.
At the prestigious event, Honda Clarity PHEV won the Best Innovation Award, while BMW X2 takes home Emotional Award and Daihatsu Tocot proudly defended Small Mobility award. Although Toyota team didn’t take the first place, Gazoo Racing team did receive the COTY steering committee’s “Special Achievement Award” for the super popular victories at Le mas 24-hours and the World Rally Championships. At the event, Honda N-Van was also honored.
